Self Storage Organization

Self storage units in general are great tools. It can be helpful to keep your self storage unit as organized as possible in order to save space and be able to find what you need when you need it.

Space Saving

You save money if you can conserve as much space as possible for everything that you want to place within the self storage unit in your possession. Imagine your self storage unit is like a suitcase. If you just try to throw random stuff into it haphazardly, it will fill up pretty quickly and you won't be able to put as much stuff into the suitcase. However, if you take the time to organize what is going to go into the suitcase, you can fit more into it by using every inch of the suitcase more efficiently.

Faster and Easier Retrieval

It can be frustrating, annoying, and time-consuming to attempt to look for an item you know is somewhere in your storage unit, but that you just can't seem to find. This is often because the item is lumped in with other, unrelated things (the necklace in a box with a bunch of pens and binder clips or the fishing rod that got stored in a bundle of skis). If you do need to pull something out of storage for a trip, business purposes, etc., it's nice to be able to get it and go as quickly as possible. Staying organized will help with this.

In order to better organize your unit, use the following tips:

  • Fold things that can be folded so that they take up less space. This would include tables, blankets, chairs, tents, and clothing.
  • Stack items. Instead of laying everything at random places on the floor, use the vertical portion of the unit as well so that you get the most for your storage fee every month. Just remember not to stack heavy items on top of light items, not to stack liquids on top of valuable items (such as expensive rugs or jewelry), and not to stack things any taller than you can safely reach (for most people, this would be between 5 and 6 feet).
  • Put items in plastic boxes and label them for easy retrieval.
  • Put related items together (necklaces, bracelets, and rings together; baseball hat, baseball, catcher's mitt together).

Keep your storage organized and you get more bang for your storage fee buck. For more information, talk to a professional like J C Self Storage.
